Chemical Dependency is a a term used to describe someone who is addicted to drugs. It is a progressive disease that starts slowly but then progresses rapidly. Someone may start using drugs on the weekends, or only occasionally, but then at some point the person begins to crave the drug more and more until they become chemically dependent. Drug dependency, or chemical dependency, can happen almost immediately. What happens is that a person will develop a tolerance for a chemically addictive substance and need more and more of the chemical to get the same feeling. In the television show House, Hugh Laurie's character Dr. House is addicted to pain killers. Hugh Laurie's character in the television show House is a perfect depiction of a person who needs more and more of a chemical to achieve the same desired effect. The television show correctly depicted the progressive nature of chemical dependency. Sometimes, when a person uses an addictive chemical or drug such as speed, crack, or cocaine, the person will almost immediately become addicted in the sense that he or she will physically crave the drug once they stop using it, or the effects of the drug wear off. When an addictive drug wears off, the person will physically crave the chemical. This is a natural bodily reaction to an addictive drug. The same thing happens when people take oxycontin, vicodin, or any other prescription chemical that is addictive as shown in the television show House.
