Bipolar disorder is a common diagnosis in drug and alcohol treatment. Bipolar disorder is thought to occur as a result of decreased activity in the caudate and putamen areas of the brain and is associated with unipolar depression and bipolar disorder. There is also thought to be an increase of activity in the anterior (left) caudate and (left) anterior cingulate parts of the brain in people with bipolar disorder. There are many medications used to treat bipolar disorder in drug rehab, and many of them are very effective, but because bipolar disorder is often over-diagnosed in people with drug and alcohol addictions, at NTS we like to have each of our clients re-evaluated and reassessed before pursing treatment for a particular disorder. Many addicts and alcoholics are labeled with bipolar disorder because their drug and alcohol use and behavior mimics the symptoms of bipolar disorder. This is why it is important that all clients entering drug rehab be re-diagnosed throughout their stay in treatment. Sometimes it is difficult to give a correct diagnosis when a person is newly sober.
