FREE FROM JAIL BUT BACK IN DRUG REHAB!

Recently NTS has increased in census, and many other drug rehabs in California are also seeing an increase in their census, as a result of the jails freeing their non-violet drug and alcohol offenders. NTS has seen many of its alumni readmit who were in jail for drug and alcohol offenses. I know many other drug rehabs in California that are seeing the same thing happen to them. People are being let out of jail by the hundreds and flooding California drug rehab centers. This was predictable. Where else would they go? Their drug and alcohol problem was not treated in jail and so they enter treatment when they get out. Many of the people who were in jail (or the Farm, as they call it) were using drugs in jail. So the people who are entering drug rehabs in California from jails are not sober. They may have been in one of the most controlled, restrictive environments there is, but drugs still abound in jail and it is apparently as easy to get, if not easier, than on the street. This trend of releasing prisoners to drug rehabs in California will continue for a while and Californians must be prepared of the ramifications of the budget crisis.

Alcohol Assessments/Testing for Courts

We accept Court Referrals for Testing and Treatment at NTS for a low fee, and on a sliding scale. The reports are in-depth and we communicate with the courts, whether the referral for testing and assessment comes from Alaska, Utah, or Orange County, we are experienced at conducting assessments and testing. Should the report results suggest you need treatment, then we can provide affordable outpatient treatment that satisfies virtually every court requirement. Our outpatient treatment services at NTS can be modified and adjusted to fit the needs outlined in the assessment and court requirements. NTS Outpatient Services are court and probation approved and are exceptional in quality.

The Assessment: The assessment is generally an hour long clinical interview to assess for mental, alcohol, and/or drug problems. After the interview a report is generated with recommendations to the court for treatment, if the person needs treatment. Sometimes the person who comes in for an assessment only needs some education on addiction and alcoholism. Other times the person needs therapy. Either way, the recommendation will be suggested to the court and the client can either complete the recommendations at NTS or we can refer the client to the appropriate services somewhere else.

LINKS Program at NTS - Christ Based Drug Treatment

The NTS LINKS Program is a Christ based addiction treatment program that helps Christians recover from their addictions using Christian based methods and curriculum. The program is the newest program at NTS and we are very excited about it. Christ based addiction treatment is actually more rare than one would think, given all of the Christian mega-churches in Orange County. We expect the LINKS Program to be one of the best Christian Addiction Treatment Programs in Orange County, California. Short Term Addiction Treatment

"Short Term" addiction treatment is available at some addiction treatment programs, but generally addiction treatment programs are designed to be a minimum of 30 days. If you are able to find a short term addiction treatment program (e.g., less than 30 days) then it will usually consist of two weeks of inpatient treatment and then additional outpatient treatment. Historically, addiction treatment programs were created as 28 day treatment programs because that's all the insurance companies would pay for. These days most addiction treatment programs, with the exception of a few, have extended their programs to be longer than 30 days. People can still do 30 days of addiction treatment (or 28 days), but it is almost always suggested that a person stay in drug rehab for longer than 30 days if it is at all feasible for the person to do so. No one has even considered designing a short term addiction treatment program because according to research long term treatment, not short term treatment, is more effective. Some of the old addiction treatment programs that are now extinct were short term addiction treatment centers promising quick cures, but these failed miserably and went out of business. Every once in a while the public is sold quick cures to addiction and alcoholism, but don't be fooled, there is no such thing. Treatment for addiction and alcoholism is a lifelong process that often begins in a treatment facility, but then must continue long after.

At NTS we have allowed people to enter our addiction treatment facility for two weeks, but they had to commit to outpatient treatment after leaving our inpatient facility.

Orange County California Releasing Inmates - The Effect on Drug and Alcohol Treatment in California

Yesterday it was announced that California would be taking many parolees off parole and releasing non-violent offenders. According to the Orange County Register, "More than 1,500 county inmates have been reported to have been released statewide under the new guidelines, including 401 inmates from Orange County jails. Most of those inmates were released by counties that interpreted the law to mean that inmates could earn time off their sentences retroactively – resulting in the some early releases on the day the law took effect." Most of these inmates are non-violent offenders, well behaved, and do not present a physical risk to others in the sense that they were not convicted of sex crimes or violent crimes. What that means is that most of the people being released are drug addicts and alcoholics with drug and alcohol violations. Almost everyone can agree that treatment within jails for alcoholism and drug addiction is not the best, and that most of these addicts and alcoholics will be released untreated.

According to the Orange County Register, "In the Sacramento case, Superior Court Judge Loren E. McMaster said that the release of inmates into the streets under the new provisions, while the number of deputies is being reduced, is a 'formula for disaster.'"
As I have stated before, this is a Formula For Disaster! Drug and alcohol rehabs in Orange County and in California will surely be inundated with clients. I guess that's good for business, but no one wants what's about to happen in California to happen.

The only way this would have been able to work, and perhaps even help, would have been if every County in California had already set up drug diversion programs and drug courts that these inmates could be transferred in to upon their release. Unfortunately most of those programs have been cut as well, leaving the inmates with no resources. I'm all for releasing people from prison and jail with non-violent drug offenses, but only if it means they will be going to addiction treatment.

So once again I'm suggesting that all Californians consider moving out of state or stay off the roads after 10pm and definitely don't drive on the weekends. There might be a lot of drunk and drugged drivers on the road sooner than later.

Charlie Sheen's Girlfriend and Phillips Enter Drug Rehab

Chynna Phillips and Brooke (Charlie Sheen's WIfe) entered drug rehab recently. Chynna's people (I can't believe she still has "people") say it is for "anxiety." Well, people only enter drug rehab for drugs and usually it's the drug abuse that causes so much anxiety. It still amazes me that publicists and managers try and lie to the public about why someone enter rehab. My favorite publicist/manager comment I've heard throughout the years is what they say when a rock star has to cancel a concert and they say it's from "exhaustion and dehydration." Ya right... excessive drug use and alcohol consumption do cause exhaustion and dehydration, but they make it seem like they are working so hard that they just collapsed from all their hard work.

Brooke (Charlie Sheen's wife) is another story. When the infamous incident happened everyone who knew what was really going on with Chuck and Brooke expected that a trip to rehab for Brooke was forthcoming. I hope she gets the help she needs.

Remember that whenever a celebrity checks in to a rehab, they are their for some addiction. They have to be. Addiction treatment facilities are licensed to treat addictions and not anxiety as a primary diagnosis. They are not allowed to treat "anxiety" only. So don't be fooled by what uncreative publicists and managers tell the public through the media. Always be wary of "statements" released by publicists and managers. They are almost never the truth.

Orange County California Sober Living - Lower Your Expectations

If you are looking for Sober Living in Orange County, California there are many places that offer fairly good/safe environments for post-treatment sober living. The important thing to remember when choosing a sober living is to keep your expectations low. Sober Living is not the same as residential, or even transitional, addiction treatment. Sober Living houses in Orange County are unlicensed and usually understaffed. Sometimes they are referred to as "halfway houses." In the ideal world, sober living houses, or halfway houses, are meant for people who have completed residential addiction treatment successfully, but are not fully ready to live on their own. Sober Houses, or Sober Living, is generally cheaper because they do not do any addiction treatment, but only "babysit" the people living in the house. Sober Living Houses in Orange County are, for lack of a better word, adult babysitting houses. Sober living houses have rules and requirements, but that's it.

In contrast, Transitional Sober Living is usually done at a residential treatment facility and has all the babysitting benefits of a Sober Living, but also has some addiction treatment thrown in. For example, we call Transitional Living at NTS, Sober Living on Steroids. People in the Transitional Living Program have a case manager, sometimes a therapist, and must attend three of our Outpatient Groups per week. Transitional Living has more staff available on a regular basis because it draws from the more intense and expensive Residential Addiction Treatment Program.

So, if you are considering a Sober Living House, possibly as a cheaper option, make sure you lower your expectations. A sober living house may sound like a good idea (a cheaper option), but often times they are just relapse homes for people in-between more intensive treatments.
Generally, if a person is not ready to live on his or her own after long-term residential treatment, then it usually means that they need more time in residential treatment. The goal of residential extended care treatment is always to help the alcoholic or addict transition back in to living on their own. Sober Living Houses tend to attract people who are not ready to get sober and actually need more intensive long-term residential addiction treatment.

SPICE and Drug and Alcohol Treatment - The New Epidemic

Spice is supposed to be a mixture of "herbs,"but studies have been unable to prove that the herbs listed on the package are actually in the substance. Spice is sold in head shops across the country. Spice is legal and at this point in time, extremely difficult to detect in urine. Further examination of the drug by scientists has found that the main ingredient in Spice is a synthetic Cannabinoid that German scientists have since listed as an illegal substance. Other countries have followed suit and banned the substance, or substances, found in Spice.

At this time, drug and alcohol treatment facilities across the United States are struggling with controlling this legal form of marijuana. Clients within drug rehabs across the United States are smoking Spice on a daily basis and drug rehabs are scrambling to find ways to detect the substance in urinalysis tests.

At NTS, we have done our own research in to the drug Spice and found ways to detect it in Urinalysis tests. We have also researched the different ways Spice is packaged and what it looks like so that we know what we are looking for when we search client's belongings and person. Since becoming more adept at detecting and finding the drug Spice, we are now much better at controlling its abuse in our drug rehab.

Spice is a drug, and like many substances that began as a legal substance, Spice will most likely be banned in the United States soon, but right now it is a big problem in drug rehabs all across the United States.

People in residential and primary drug rehabs across America who do not want to be sober find ways to beat urinalysis tests and spend enormous amounts of time finding drugs that are undetectable in common urinalysis tests so that they can continue to get high without consequence. The first step for drug rehabs is to become highly aware of the situation. Word has not fully spread across the country, but as soon as one person in a drug rehab finds the drug Spice, it will permanently effect the entire drug treatment community forever, because the information will be passed down to newer residents, and so on, and so on...

Orange County Drug Rehabs and the California Budget Crisis

As I've stated before, Orange County and California in general is going to begin to feel the effects of the California budget crisis and drug rehabs will play a big part in cleaning up the mess that will be left in the wake of this catastrophic event. California governmental departments (the DA, Probation, Etc…) are about to lay off all employees hired in the last year, and in some cases the last three years. Not only will this create havoc in the economy, but this will create havoc in California. California is about to begin releasing thousands of prisoners who are non-violent offenders. What this means is that thousands of drug addicts and alcoholics will be released back in to communities in California. Assuming that most of these addicts and alcoholics have not received the treatment they needed while incarcerated, drug abuse and alcohol sales should sky rocket in the coming year. Drug related crimes, alcohol related accidents, and drug trafficking will inevitably rise to alarming rates. Of course we might not get the rights statistics about the increases because California is getting rid of the people that monitor these things. To further add to the coming chaos is the lack of police officers on the streets. California is cutting back on their police force. It doesn’t take a genius or a prophet to figure out what the outcome of these decisions will be. More untreated drug addicts and alcoholics on the street, less police presence, and less parole officers and probation officers to monitor the prisoners that are released means that there will be a lot more crime, a lot more drug abuse, a lot more alcohol related incidents, and a lot of people needing addiction treatment. Add to this the closing of government funded drug and alcohol treatment programs and drug court programs, and private drug rehab facilities will be left cleaning up the mess the California budget crisis is about to create. Remember, we have yet to feel the full effects of the California budget crisis. The worst is yet to come. Californians might want to consider evacuating to another state for the duration of the coming hurricane. Those of us in addiction treatment in California will have to stay…

College Addiction Treatment - Combining College Classes with Addiction Treatment

When the original concept of combining higher education with traditional drug treatment was introduced in 1998 people in the addiction treatment industry were more than skeptical. Everyone thought we were insane. Now, famous drug rehabs accross the United States are scrambling to develop their own college programs. Since research has shown that combining college classes with drug treatment produces better outcomes, drug rehabs (like Promises in Malibu) have sought to create their own college programs within their addiction treatment facilities. The problem is that unless done right, putting clients in college while they are in treatment can actually produce worse results and defocus from treatment efforts. A drug treatment college program must be integrated with a drug rehab's programming. It must have a separate staff dedicated to the college program elements, but the staff must also be trained in addiction treatment. The logistics of running a college program within a drug rehab produces a whole set of different hurdles to jump. In many instances, drug rehabs will find that they cannot facilitate a college program because of lack of staff, program flexibility, and lack of training. If drug rehabs attempt to create a college program halfheartedly they will be left with disastrous results. Unless all the elements of the "college combined with addiction treatment model" are in place, every attempt at instituting a college program within a drug rehab will fail, and fail miserably. Through years of experience in creating college programs within addiction treatment facilities I know that those who have tried it on their own have never been able to succeed. Unfortunately they still try at the expense of the clients they are trying to help. A college program can be a tremendous benefit to drug rehabs and their clients, but it must be done right. I have actually created what I call a "College Program Kit" that I have freely given to other drug rehabs wanting to create a college program within their addiction treatment facilities to help them in starting it, but what most drug rehabs discover is that it is not as easy as it looks, for the reasons mentioned earlier. First Snow Day at NTS - Snowboarding and Skiing in California

A couple weeks ago NTS had its first Snow Day in the local California mountains. We took over 25 clients snowboarding and skiing on a Wednesday. It was snowing/raining, but it turned out to be a beautiful day with no injuries. Some clients went just for the scenery. Taking 25 clients anywhere is difficult, but taking them on a two hour drive to the local California mountains is another story. Not many addiction treatment programs as large as ours can facilitate something like a Snow Day, but NTS is not like other programs. California has had a great snow season so far and we hope to take advantage of our close proximity to the local Southern California Ski Mountains. At NTS we like to encourage fun in sobriety as much as possible. We have formal activities twice a week and our school program (The Academy) sometimes has 3 activities per week. Last week The Academy at NTS took all their students to Universal Studios for the day. We like to encourage people who participate in activities like snowboarding and skiing to try those acitivities sober. Snowboarding and skiing is often associated with alcohol and marijuana. In fact, when we entered the Big Bear Mountain parking lot we could smell the marijuana smoke in the air, but our clients were safe and sober and that was the important thing. They made it through the day sober and learned how to snowboard and ski sober.

Sex Addiction Treatment and Drug Rehab in Orange County

Treatment for Sex Addiction is commonly done in drug rehabs because sex addiction is treated with many of the same methods used to treat drug and alcohol addiction. At NTS we have specific groups dedicated to sex and healthy relationships. In our LINKS Program, the Christian Addiction Treatment Program at NTS, there is a workbook that we use that specifically deals with sex addiction and pornography addiction. Tiger Woods' recent problems have thrust sex addiction back in to the spotlight. Sex addiction treatment and drug rehab go hand-in-hand. Many drug addicts switch addictions and become involved in risky sexual practices. Many times people who get sober will participate in risky sex behavior, or sexually addictive types of behaviors, for a little while then stop when they see the consequences of their actions. Others will fully develop a sexual addiction in sobriety. There are not many rehabs in Orange County specifically focused on treating sexual addiction, but many drug and alcohol rehabs in Orange County will be able to treat mild sexual compulsivity and addiction.

Attachment Theory and Addiction Treatment

The following are the definitions of attachment styles. These styles are often used to help clinicians conceptualize client's issues.

Secure Attachment – Strongest type of attachment. Knowing one can depend on parent, provider or partner. Knowing important individuals will be there when support is needed. Knowing what to expect; consistency of reaction.

Avoidant Attachment – Not secure. Avoidant individuals have learned that depending on others will not get them the secure feeling that they want so they learn to withdraw from asking or needing and learn to take care of themselves.

Ambivalent Attachment – Ambivalence ( not being completely sure of something) is another way an individual may be insecurely attached to significant others or parents. Those who are considered ambivalent have learned that sometimes needs, emotional and otherwise may be met and sometimes they are not. These individuals will continually seek that secure connection feeling that they receive intermittently.

Disorganized Attachment – Disorganized individuals do not know what to expect from others. Disorganized attachments exist mainly with parents and organized attachments are found with others. This means individuals have learned ways to get what they need even if it is not the best way. As a child this individual learns how to predict how parents will react to certain situations and learn to share with their parents what their parents will react to positively and go to others when they know it might be a negative reaction. Disorganized attachment individuals also become skilled in how to interact with their parents to get the reaction they want.

Los Angeles County Probation - Commentary

We know that Los Angeles probation is overwhelmed, but a recent incident involving Los Angeles Probation let me know exactly how overwhelmed and overworked they are. Los Angeles has many criminals to worry about and the overcrowding in LA jails is causing many more people than usual to be placed on probation, but is that any excuse for the probation department in LA to treat its probationers the way they are treated? Appearently, people on probation in LA County are treated with very little respect and berated to the point of tears, and these are probationers are ones who are doing well. I have worked with probation in many counties in California and they are generally pleasant, but the recent incident one of our clients had with LA probation was appalling. LA County probation must be suffering tremendously from the California budget constraints for them to act the way they acted. NTS works primarily with Orange County probation and the Orange County probation department has a good understanding of addiction treatment. LA County probation needs some obvious help and support. Once again the devastating effects of the economy in California are only begining to be felt by all of us. It will get worse.

Tiger Woods and Sex Addiction - Pine Grove

So, Tiger Woods made a predictable move and checked himself in to Pinegrove's Sex Addiction Treatment Rehab. I know Pinegrove's program fairly well and it has an outstanding program for sex addiction. Whether or not Tiger Woods is going because he actually thinks he has an addiction or because it was the only PR move he could play at this stage of the game is another story. The great shock every celebrity gets when they check in to addiction rehab for PR reasons only is that whether they like it or not they will receive treatment. Celebrities may have simply wanted a break from their problems, but when anyone checks in to rehab they are forced to face their problems. Pinegrove's sex addiction program is intense and there is no way he will be able to skate through the program without confronting his demons. Whether he likes it or not, Tiger is in rehab and there's no escape now. Given Tiger's extramarital behavior he does seem to have a problem with fidelity, but addiction? That's for him to decide...

Christian Addiction Treatment- Orange County, California

Psychiatric Patients in Drug Rehab, Orange County

Acute Psychiatric patients sometimes have nowhere to go. The psychiatric hospitals these days are limited in what they can do and while they have improved over the years, they remain an expensive option for most people. Psychiatric Hospitals do take insurance, which is good and can help bare the financial cost of longterm psychiatric care. If the psychiatric patient also has a substance abuse issue, then there are many drug rehabs in Orange County that can often handle acute psychiatric patients if they are med compliant. Therein lies the dilemna. An acute psychiatric patient, for example someone with severe bipolar disorder, psychosis, or dellusions/hallucinations, if they are med compliant are easy to treat, but if they are not med compliant in drug rehab then they are better suited for psychiatric hospitalization. Sometimes it is better for them to be stabalized and get used to their meds before entering a drug rehab facility. Other times, they may need long term psychiatric hospitalization. Most drug rehabs in Orange County will be able to assess whether a client needs psychiatric hospitalization and help with the refferal.

DUI Classes versus Drug Rehab in Orange County

DUI classes are different than drug rehab court programs. DUI classes, the classes many people are ordered to after getting a DUI in Orange County, are weekly classes held in a classroom atmosphere designed to educate drunk drivers about alcoholism. DUI classes are relatively cheap and have contracts with California to provide DUI education. Treatment for alcoholism is much different than DUI classes offered at places like Gold Coast Counseling in Costa Mesa, California. Places like Gold Coast Counseling do terrific work, but some people need full inpatient treatment for alcoholism after getting a DUI. The DUI classes are meant to be an introduction to drug and alcohol treatment and can often lead to inpatient alcohol treatment in a drug rehab. Drug rehabs will satisfy all the court requirements for a DUI, but DUI classes will not necessarily satisfy all the court's requirements. Some courts will require that a person enter addiction treatment as a result of their DUI, specifically if they have more than one. Drug Rehab Orange County, California - The Best Places In Orange County for Drug Rehab

Orange County, California is inundated with addiction treatment facilities but there are a few that stand out. The important thing to ask any potential drug rehab in Orange County you might be talking to about treatment is what is actually included in the cost of treatment. Many drug rehabs in Orange County will bill clients for little things, things that should be included in the cost of treatment. Some Orange County drug rehabs have become like hotels, charging for every little thing they can. There are some really good quality drug rehabs in Orange County that do there best to include everything possible in the initial cost of addiction treatment. So ask what is inlcuded in the cost of treatment and what the ancillary charges will be duing treatment.
Some ancillary charges that are common across all drug rehabs are the following:

Therapy/Psychology Sessions (Therapists and Psychologists are often too expensive for drug rehabs to employ full-time and so this is a common ancillary charge at most drug rehabs)
Extra Spending Cash - For things like toiletries, personal things, hair cuts, nails, etc... This is called Money On The Books or MOB and residential drug treatment facilities will often ask that people put an initial sum of money on the client's books to cover extra personal things the client might need, typically a couple thousand dollars.
Medication - No treatment I know of pays for a client's medication so this will almost always be an additional expense and is usually taken out of the client's MOB account.
Psychological Testing - Psychological Testing is a diagnostic tool used to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of clients in drug rehab. A FULL BATTERY of psychological testing is expensive, ranging anywhere from $3000 to $5000. Having a client take a single MMPI psychological test upon admission is NOT a FULL psychological battery. So often this will be an extra charge.

Gym Membership - Drug treatment programs are actually required by State regulations to offer some form of exercise.

Drug Addiction Treatment and New Year's Eve

New Year's Eve and Drug Addiction Treatment is a dangerous time. At NTS we do not allow any of our clients to take passes for New Year's Eve because of the dangers the night entails. New Year's Eve is the one night during the year when non-alcoholics behave like alcoholics. On New Year's Day the entire world experiences more hangovers than at any other time of the year. For seasoned alcoholics and addicts, New Year's Eve is the one night during the year when they blend in with the rest of the crowd and their drinking/drug use can go largely unnoticed.

For alcoholics and addicts in recovery, especially the first year of their recovery, it is vitally important that they attend some type of sober event on New Year's Eve. The temptation to drink or use drugs on New Year's Eve is greater than on any other night of the year - all holidays included.

At NTS we plan New Year's Eve carefully and thoughtfully. We want our clients to experience sober fun on New Year's Eve and if they can get through one New Year's Eve sober, then they have a better chance at staying sober the next New Year's Eve.

Christmas Drug Rehab - Spending Christmas in Addiction Treatment

Maybe not all people in drug treatment during Christmas time are Christians, but many still celebrate Christmas in one way or another. Spending Christmas in Drug Rehab can be very depressing, but it doesn't have to be. It's just another day, and addiction treatment facilities do their best to make Christmas in drug rehab enjoyable, but they also strive to emphasize to their clients that it is just another day in treatment, another day they have to try and stay sober. Many people in drug rehab during Christmas want to go home to their families, but we strongly recommend that they don't. Going back in to the family system is not advised. It can be a strong trigger for alcoholics and addicts to return to their families during Christmas time. We tell our clients to relax and remind them that if they miss one Christmas while they're in drug rehab it's not the end of the world. There will be many Christmas's after drug rehab.

Christian Drug Rehab - Orange County, California

Orange County, California is known for its strong Christian community. There are many famous mega-churches in Orange County, including Rick Warren's Saddleback Church, Chuck Smith's Calvary Chapel, and Mariner's Church. With the strong Christian presence in Orange County, one would think that there would be more drug and alcohol treatment facilities dedicated to helping people with drug addiction, but there are not many at all. There is Celebrate Recovery, which is a popular and strong recovery based ministry, but inpatient Christ Based addiciton treatment is lacking. The Christian Drug Rehabs that are in existence today in Orange County are often either a traditional treatment program with a sprinkling of Christianity, or Christian boot camps with strict rules and "One Step" recovery. Neither versions of Christian Drug Rehab are adequate to truly help someone suffering from an addiction to drugs or alcohol.

In recognition of the need for truly effective Christ based addiction treatment NTS is developing the LINKS Program, a Christ based addiction treatment program dedicated to helping people recover from drug and/or alcohol addiction. We have been developing the LINKS Christ based addiction treatment program for quite some time now, and we believe we are creating what will be a Christ based treatment program of the highest caliber. Groups and initial programming is set to begin the first week of January, but we already have the staff, programming, and facilities in place. We look forward to a formal Grand Opening of our new Christ based addiction treatment program called the LINKS Program soon.
