Methamphetamine Abuse Gets Expensive!

by

I just met with a new client who came in to NTS for Methamphetamine Addiction Treatment. He provided me with some interesting information about the current meth trade. He told me that the cost of methamphetamine, speed, crank, etc. has doubled recently. Originally, during the great methamphetamine plague that transformed the face of addiction in the 90′s, meth was cheap. For $40 a person could get enough speed to stay awake for three days. Now, he tells me, that methamphetamine has doubled in price. The Reason? The government, in their attempt to curb the speed epidemic and manufacturing of methamphetamine, made it extremely difficult to get a key ingredient to make speed-ephedrine. While their intentions were noble, it created a black market empire for the distribution and manufacturing of ephedrine which is legal in many other countries. So, China in particular, began manufacturing and importing ephedrine into the US. Since acquiring ephedrine has become more difficult, the cost of methamphetamine has risen. What used to be a cheap drug has now become almost as expensive as cocaine. Has it slowed down the use and abuse of the drug? Only time will tell. But, the rising cost of methamphetamine will inevitably result in an increase in crime related behavior associated with getting money to be able to afford the drug. Methamphetamine has been called the most addictive drug known to man. It was the only drug that brought me to my knees so I know how addictive it can be. Sincerely, A Criminologist
