Orange County Probation Approved Drug and Alcohol Treatment

by

Orange County probation approved drug and alcohol treatment is an option for many people who have been convicted of non-violent drug crimes. The option is not available to everyone, but most Orange County judges have welcomed the treatment instead of incarceration option. When the three strikes law in California was put into place, while it may have seemed like a good idea at the time to the voters of California to be tough on crime, it actually created more problems than it solved and tied the discretionary ability of judges to sentence people according to the severity of their crimes.

What has happened over the years is that people have been put in jail/prison for long periods of time for crimes that may have not fit the severity of their crimes. Statistically speaking, most people are incarcerated in Orange County, California for drug related charges. If these non-violent drug offenders could be sentenced to probation approved drug and alcohol treatment in Orange County instead of jail, it would and has decreased recidivism rates and reduce overcrowding in our jails and prisons.
Originally the penal system in the United States was created based on four concepts: incapacitation, rehabilitation, retribution, and deterrence. Rehabilitation was originally the goal of the penal system, but as the penal system failed to rehabilitate, people gave up on rehabilitating criminals and focused instead on the retribution, incapacitation, and deterrence. Only recently as rehabilitation become more of a focus in the penal system, especially in the Orange County judicial system. NTS Staff
