Prescription Drug Addiction Treatment

Prescription drugs are emotionally, psychologically, and physically addicting. Drug addiction essentially means that you have an intense craving for the drug, whatever it may be. Drug addiction means that a person will want to use their drug of choice over and over again despite negative consequences. When a person ceases using a drug, unpleasant physical and emotional reactions will occur.

According to the White House Office of Drug Control Policy non-medical use or abuse of prescription drugs is the most rapidly increasing drug problem in the USA today. The NIDA or National Institute on Drug Abuse classifies three main categories of prescription drug abuse and addiction: opioids such as painkillers, central nervous system depressants such as tranquilizers, and stimulants such as ritalin and adderall. After marijuana and before cocaine, prescription drugs are the second most frequent form of drug use and abuse which consequently can lead to addiction and even overdose if not used as prescribed.

Not everyone who uses drugs becomes addicted, but the chemical components of drugs often make not becoming addicted virtually impossible in many circumstances. A person can become physically addicted to a drug almost immediately depending on the drug. In addition to the physical addiction, prescription drug addiction involves a strong psychological component as well. People can become both psychologically and physically addicted to drugs.

Breaking a prescription drug addiction cycle is long and difficult, but not impossible. Inpatient drug addiction treatment is often required for a person to successfully abstain from using drugs for the rest of their lives. Often people will relapse while in treatment, but this is not necessarily a setback. Relapses in treatment, if handled appropriately by trained clinical professionals, can become a useful tool in the prescription addiction treatment process. At NTS Addiction Treatment & Behavioral Health Centers we believe that relapse is sometimes part of the process of recovery and that a person can learn from their relapse with the proper clinical guidance.
